Introducing the oil-immersed transformer, a cutting-edge marvel of engineering that embodies a superior, rational structure and enhanced operational capabilities. This innovative transformer harnesses the power of oil both as its chief insulation and cooling medium, enabling versatile cooling methods such as self-cooling, air-cooling, water-cooling, and forced oil circulation. The meticulously designed components, including the iron core, windings, and oil tank, are complemented by an oil reservoir, respirator, explosion-proof tube, and heat sink. Further enhancing its functionality are key elements like the insulation bushing, tap changer, gas relay, thermometer, and oil purifier.
Due to the enduring immersion of the silicon steel sheets within the transformer, oil infiltration into the interlayers is inevitable, offering elasticity that serves as an excellent buffer. Consequently, the oil-immersed transformer is distinguished by its remarkably low noise. Despite this, the internal placement of the voltage regulating switch in the oil tank means the switch's contact state remains concealed during voltage adjustments. A poor contact would mimic a circuit disconnection scenario. Poor contact can result in switch burnout, particularly under excessive load conditions.

Transformer normal service conditions

1. The installation elevation must remain below 1000 meters;

2. Maximum air temperature must not exceed +40ºC;

3. The highest daily average air temperature should be +30ºC;

4. The annual average air temperature is ideally +20ºC;

5. Lowest permissible outdoor air temperature is -2
5ºC.

Type of cooling
 
(1) Oil-immersed transformers generally operate with one of three sophisticated cooling methodologies: oil-immersed self-cooling, oil-immersed air-cooling, and forced oil circulation.
The self-cooling method relies on the natural convection process of oil to efficiently dissipate heat.
 
(2). The air-cooling method advances the self-cooling technique by incorporating fans that actively channel air into the oil tank and pipes, significantly enhancing heat dissipation. Forced oil circulation employs an oil pump to draw hot oil from the transformer, cool it externally, and then reintroduce it into the system.

Structure Function
 
In the urban rail transit power supply system's main substations, the three-phase oil-immersed transformer is predominantly used. This transformer setup comprises a core, windings, oil tank, voltage regulating device, radiator, oil reservoir, gas relay, insulation bushing, and explosion-proof tube, each serving a pivotal role.
1. Core
Crafted from stacked silicon steel sheets with superior magnetic conductivity, the core creates a closed magnetic flux circuit, around which the primary and secondary windings are skillfully wound.
Transformer cores are categorized into two main structures: core type and shell type, with the core type being more prevalent. The core of this transformer features columns and a yoke, and is ingeniously designed with internal oil channels that facilitate cooling and enhance overall heat dissipation.
2. Winding
The winding, also referred to as the coil, serves as the heart of the transformer's conductive circuit. Crafted meticulously by coiling copper or aluminum wire into multi-layered cylindrical forms, these windings are a testament to precision engineering. Arranged concentrically on the core column, the primary and secondary windings maintain a carefully calibrated distance, insulated from each other to ensure impeccable functionality. Typically, the low-voltage winding nestles within, while the high-voltage one envelops it from the outside. Encased in insulating material, this setup guarantees unmatched insulation, both between individual wires and from the ground itself.
3. Oil Tank
The oil tank is not just a container; it's the protective shell of the oil-immersed transformer. Beyond its primary role of holding oil, this tank is ingeniously designed to accommodate a myriad of other essential components, making it a crucial part of the transformer's architecture.
4. Voltage Regulator
The voltage regulator is adeptly engineered to maintain the secondary voltage of the transformer at consistent levels. In response to any fluctuations in the power supply voltage, the regulator steps in, adjusting the transformer's tap switch to align with the desired stability of the secondary output voltage. This sophisticated apparatus is available in two variants: the on-load voltage regulator and the off-load voltage regulator, each offering tailored solutions for stability.
5. Radiator
Ingeniously placed on the oil tank's wall, the radiator is a pivotal element in the transformer's cooling system. Through strategically connected upper and lower pipes, it employs the principle of oil convection to facilitate a seamless flow of cooled oil back into the tank, effectively lowering the transformer's temperature. For enhanced cooling efficiency, options such as self-cooling, forced air cooling, and forced water cooling can be integrated, ensuring optimal performance under diverse conditions.

6. Oil Sump
The oil sump, also recognized as the oil tank, plays a vital role in accommodating the thermal dynamics of transformer oil, as it expands and contracts with temperature changes. By providing a buffer zone, it ensures the oil tank remains consistently full, while its design minimizes the air-oil interface, thus decelerating the oxidation process of the oil.
7. Gas Relay
Also known as the gas protection relay, the gas relay is the primary defense against internal transformer faults. Strategically positioned in the conduit between the oil tank and oil sump, this device springs into action during critical malfunctions, linking the circuit breaker trip path. In less severe fault scenarios, it activates the fault signal circuit, safeguarding the transformer's integrity.
8. Insulation Bushing
Strategically mounted on the top cover of the transformer oil tank, the high and low insulation bushings, typically crafted from porcelain, play a crucial role for oil-immersed transformers. Their primary function is to ensure flawless insulation between the high and low voltage winding leads and the oil tank while providing secure lead fixation.
9. Explosion-proof Tube
The explosion-proof tube, or safety air passage, is a critical safety feature affixed to the transformer's oil tank. Equipped with a glass explosion-proof membrane at its outlet, it acts as a fail-safe mechanism. In the event of a severe internal fault where the gas relay fails, this tube ensures that the gas pressure is released safely by breaching the glass membrane, thereby averting a potential transformer explosion.
